One thing you can be sure of in a resort town like Puerto Peñasco is finding beer. No problema. First impressions might lead you to believe that this is the land of light beers. Just the thing for a day by the beach, those clear glass bottles of bright yellow beer topped with a lime are pretty much the logo for a trip south of the border. But did you know that you can get a variety of craft beers that are brewed right here in Mexico too? Check out what’s available at the First Annual Wine and Artisanal Beer Festival, happening Saturday, June 28th at the Hotel Laos Mar at the Playa Bonita Resort.
Selections from three breweries located in the state of Baja Norte are represented, along with the wines of seven different vinyards. The breweries are Old Mission Ensenada, Cerveza Tijuana, and Cucapá. The entry fee gets you samples at all of the booths, with experts on hand to explain the finer points of creating and enjoying hand made beer and wine.
Laura Palacio is the owner of El Tapeo Wine Bar, located at the Hotel Laos Mar, and the event organiser. With El Tapeo, she realized her desire to bring something unique to Rocky Point from her experiences in Mexicos’ wine country, the Valle Guadalupe near Ensenada. “For around the cost of one bottle of wine, you get to try it all” says Laura. “If you find one you love, it will be at a special price. Also, this event helps support the local DIF and their social services.”
Along with artisanal cheeses, breads, olives, wine and beer, there will be music. Nicho Hinojosa is well known in Mexico, playing a style called Trova. At it’s most basic, Trova is about a singer and a guitar, playing songs about love and loss. It’s music that is emotional and poetic. Just right for a glass of wine. Or beer.
