Most Arizona schools, even the Universities, mark October 8th through 16th as Fall Break. Some of the years best weather invites everyone to get out and have fun.
Rocky Point is no exception. The ocean temperature is perfect, nights are cool, days sunny. Shrimp fishing season is on, so expect tacos de camaron and Shrimp Cocktails to be out of this world tasty!
First timer? Just want some suggestions? It’s hard to go wrong if you include anything from the list below in your Rocky Point Fall Break activities.
1. Check out the new PEÑASCO letters
Be one of the first to take a selfie with the colorful PEÑASCO letters. Think ‘HOLLYWOOD’, but smaller. Walk to the top of the amphitheater seats and there they are.
One of the many little touches of art that have sprung up around town, this one is situated ‘just right’ to make the perfect tourist photo, with the ocean and all of the Sandy Beach resorts as a back drop.

2. Sea Lion swim at Bird Island
A must-do activity. Bird Island sits off shore to the east of town. The barren, rocky Island is home to ocean going birds that nest here. Hence the name.
Rubbing shoulders with the Gulls, Cormorants, and Boobies are a colony of Sea Lions.
Cruising out to the island is a fun activity all by itself. Once there, you will be astounded as young Sea Lion pups hit the water to check you out. Grab a kayak, or a mask and snorkel and dive in!

3. Check out the crows nest at Boo Bar
Up above the row of fish markets along the Malecon is Boo Bar. A small place, it’s always been a big part of having a good time in Rocky Point.
A local institution because of it’s fun staff, good food and live music, Boo Bar has the distinction of offering swings rather than stools at it’s bar!
A recently added palapa covered deck juts out above the Sea at the back of the bar. Way up in the palm leaved roof is a little ‘Crow’s Nest’. With room for just a few people, it is sure to be a hit with those wanting the best of sunset views while still keeping an eye on the bar craziness going on down below.
4. Hobie Regatta
Sport sailing of the little catamaran sail boats called Hobie Cats has a fanatical following. A colorful Rocky Point Fall Break activity to check out is the 2016 Hobie North American Championship taking place Saturday, October. 8th.
You don’ have to be a sailor to walk the beach and enjoy the beauty as the boats head out to cover the horizon in reds, yellows, and blues. Photographers be sure to bring your long lens for this one.
5. Mimosa Sunday at Colin’s Cantina
If you are stretching out the weekend, and don’t have to hit the road early on Sunday, Colin’s Cantina at the Princesa Resort offers the ever popular Mimosa Sundays. From 8:00am to 11:00am, buy breakfast and get all the Mimosas you want for $10 U.S.
A very gracious way to ease into the end of the weekend, Enjoy your Mimosas on Colin’s patio with ocean views and live music. Salud!

6. Southern AZ Desert Racing Point to Point
SADR has been racing the back country around Rocky Point for the past few years. Off roaders take off from the center of town and follow a course that bumps along trails through wild and lonesome desert.
Staging for the race happens along side the Plaza Camaron, the city park known for the statue of a shrimp right in the middle. It’s a great opportunity to get up close to the cars, and talk to the racers.
You can set up along the route in or out of town and watch as the cars go whizzing by. Another Rocky Point Fall Break activity perfect if you want to come back with some great photos.
7. Nothing
You’ve hit the beach, clung to a banana boat, and drank more tequila than at any time since back-in-the-day at Gamma Chi.
You are probably hanging at a pretty nice place, with people you enjoy being with. Time to do … nothing.
Chill. There is always someone who wants to light the barbecue, go buy kilos of shrimp, or throw the ball for the dog. Let them.
It’s called Fall Break for a reason!
