Feeding frenzy as birds of all kinds dive bomb schools of fish that move into Peñasco’s waters at this time of year. That’s a signal that the whales are not far behind!
Large schools of tiny fish can be seen darkening the waves just off of the beach. Migrating Pelicans, Seagulls and Terns dive beak-first into the shallow water. This environment sets the stage for the big show at the start of the year, when Fin and Humpback whales move into our shallow waters to give birth.
These schools of fish are like an ‘open’ sign at the local all you can eat buffet.
Recent years have seen first the Fins in January, followed by the Humpbacks in February. By March, they are all gone, presumably making way for Spring Breakers!
