Rocky Point had it’s first ever movie premier at the new Cinepolis theaters this Tuesday evening. 

The film ’Sonora’ is based on the book ‘La Ruta de Los Caidos’, written by local author Guillermo Munro. Set in 1931, the story follows events of the time, and was filmed in the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve.

The premier was a by invitation only event. The film will debut for the public at Cinepolis starting September 6th. 

The film is directed by Alejandro Springall, with a screenplay by John Sayles. It includes an international cast, including well known veterans of Mexican cinema Joaquin Cosio and Dolores Heredia.

The story is set along the Mexican/US border towns during the Great Depresion. At the time, the US deported Mexican citizens in response to economic hardship. In Sonora, Mexico, Chinese immigrants whre also being deported.

In this scenario, a group of people make a hazardous journey by auto across the desert on a route tradionally known as El Camino Del Diablo, the Devil’s Road. 

The real star of the movie is the incredible beauty in deserts and dune fields of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve where the movie was filmed. Here is the trailer.
