Twenty miles out of Rocky Point on our way to San Jorge Island, our group is full of the excited expectation of reaching our destination, accented by the pleasant feeling that comes after a couple of Margaritas. “There’s one” someone on the deck above me shouts. “More, over there.” Looking further out to sea we spot them. At first two, now maybe six. The dolphins make little leaps out of the water as they hurry towards…us! “Dolphins love swimming with the boat. We see them almost every time we come” the captain tells me. With 10 of them jostling to stay in front of us, they are just beyond arms reach. The beauty of nature is right in front of us too, and the voyage is only beginning.
Ecofun Rentals leads the way for Ecotourism in Puerto Peñasco. Their 70 foot catamaran is at the heart of all their activities. Carrying kayaks and stand up paddle boards, Ecofun II is a regular sight on the waters around Rocky Point.
Now the nearby Pinacates are becoming a bigger part of Ecofuns’ schedule of events. “Ever since the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve was named a UNESCO World Heritage site, we are hosting more international visitors. People are coming from Europe and China for this experience” says Ecofun director Maru Zacatelco. Tours to the Reserve, as well as ATV and kayak rentals make up a big part of the activities Ecofun offers. The big show, however, is always the trip out to Bird Island.
Isla San Jorge sits a few miles off shore. A bright white color, it is covered with birds who come to nest. Hence Bird Island. Their neighbors on the island are a colony of Sea Lions. Once there, visitors can snorkel, kayak, or just watch from the decks of Ecofun II. Sea Lion pups are curious, and will swim right up to your face mask before shooting off to the side. At least two hours are spent here, and there are regular sightings of Whale Sharks, Manta Rays, and even Fin Whales in season.
