To the list of Rocky Point’s fine taco stands, excellent sea food spots, and picturesque dive bars, comes something the world has been longing for.

Stuff the salad bar. We’ve got a cereal bar!

Called Cereal-ito (it means ‘a little cereal’), the place has tons of cereal boxes lining the walls. You can keep it simple, you know, sticking to Corn Flakes if you want. Or go nuts and mix two or three together. Put some cookies on top, we’re not here to be reasonable. Sprinkles? No one will stop you. Think gummy bears sounds like a good idea? Of course you don’t. Let’s do it anyway!

Sign your masterpiece by choosing just the right shade of food coloring for the milk. Voila!

Oh yeah, you COULD put, you know, bananas. Or nuts. Or other healthy stuff on there too. But I mean, come on!

You can order just a bowl of cereal. Or get extra. Or go all in for ‘Barra Libre’, and have as many bowls as you want.

Cereal-ito serves other things as well. You will find bagels, egg sandwiches, nice coffee, juices, milkshakes, and more.

Cereal-ito is a seriously cute, fun little place found on Boulevard Kino. As any cereal lover knows, this stuff ain’t just for breakfast. Cerealito is open 8 to 8 every day.

Every year, the Las Conchas Community Relations Comity holds the Art in the Park Event at Fiesta Park. Local artisans sell their crafts. It’s a nice opportunity to stock up on some cool Christmas gifts, and support Rocky Point small businesses.

Earlier this year, representatives of TAP Royal met with city and government officials in Rocky Point to discuss expanding their service from Phoenix. TAP Royal is a bus company with routes throughout the U.S. Southwest. They are an affiliate of Autobuses TAP, which maintains bus routes in Western Mexico.
The meeting with TAP Royal saw the company eager to begin service to Puerto Peñasco from their new terminal in Phoenix. The planned bus service did not materialize, lthough an initial launch date of Spring of this year was announced,
Currently, contacts in Rocky Point’s City Government have been informed by the bus line that September will see the start of service.
At this point, there is no word on pricing. For example, traveling from Phoenix to Las Vegas is around $40 USD.

June first is Dia de La Marina in Mexico. A wreath is laid in the Ocean, to remember those who were lost at sea. Mayor Ernesto Munro and his Linda were on hand with many dignitaries.
Many local ships join in. It is customary for them to take members of the community out to be a part of the event, free of charge.

Pro Skate Park Slated To Open July 2016

This 4th of July weekend is tentatively scheduled as the inauguration of Rocky Point’s soon-to-be-completed skate park, and a film crew from Levi Strauss will be onsite to shoot a promotional video as well.
Skate constrlogo
Construction of the project has been a labor of love for Jeff Araiza, a master concrete worker who has been involved in building over 100 of the best skate parks throughout the U.S. And Canada.
The quality of the design means Puerto Peñasco’s new skate park could become a mecca for boarders from around northern Mexico. “It will be as good as anything in he States,” said Araiza.
“This park will be be the best in Mexico, that’s for sure.”
Five years of planning came together this year on a piece of land donated by the city through Mayor Ernesto ‘Kiko’ Munro. Araiza is the head of Uncle Skate, a charity whose mission is to ‘donate skateboards to kids all over the world.’
Uncle Skate and jeans manufacturer Levi Strauss provided support to make the park a reality.
“I’m happy to be part of something this amazing,” said Araiza.
Araiza has been assisted by Jay McLane, who has been overseeing the details of the project.

“These guys back here are local boarders who really tear it up,”
said McLane, pointing to four young men working on the project in the late morning sun. “They can’t wait for this.”

During the July 4th, 2016 weekend, there will be activities celebrating the park’s opening. Even if you are not a boarder, this makes for a great spectator sport.

TAR Airlines kicks off flights to Rocky Point with low-fare special route to Peñasco from Tijuana.

Rocky Point’s International Airport will receive its first flights from TAR Airlines starting July 21st. Today the airline posted special low introductory fares from Tijuana to Rocky Point for 934 pesos = approx. 50 U.S. dollars! This is in the same ballpark as taking a bus, and around 5 hours shorter.
TAR flights
The new service will connect Rocky Point not only with Tijuana, but also the Sonoran state capitol of Hermosillo and Ciudad Juarez in Chihuahua.
A meeting was held in Hermosillo that brought together representatives of the airlines, state tourism officials, travel agencies, and others involved in the state’s tourism industry. The main take away from the attention these flight are receiving, is that state and even federal level support and attention is going into building greater access to Rocky Point.
Aerolineas TAR is a new regional airline in Mexico, going through a phase of route expansion. Find more about them at their website, Tarmexico.com.
Volaris Airlines is also planning flights out of Tijuana to Rocky Point, looking to attract travelers from across Northern Mexico.
It remains to be seen if the proximity of Tijuana’s airport will cause it to be used by vacationers coming from Southern California.

Oh, It’s Helpful Hamburgers!

It is common for towns in Mexco to have a Casa de Cultura. Here is where art events, painting classes, and traditional dance have their home. Rocky Point has one, right across from City Hall.
Our ‘Casa’ has a new addition to the facility. The modern, glass fronted two story building will make for a better experience for those taking classes, etc. This is where a lot of cool events take shape, like last October’s first ever Dia de Los Muertos festival.
Hamburgers are on the menu this Sunday, June 12th, starting at 11am. Head on down and enjoy a great tasting lunch, while helping the Arts to flourish. Fifty pesos gets you a mouth watering burger, and at the same time helps the ‘Casa’ get needed things like air conditioners, etc.
Hamburger fund raiser

You’ve heard of herding cats? How about rubber duckies? In the ocean no less!

It’s time for the Great Rubber Ducky Race. On Sunday, June 12th, hundreds of little floating ducks, usually at home in the confines of your bathtub, will get dumped into the cruel sea. But don’t feel too bad, it’s for a good cause.
One of the more ingenious charity fund raisers in a town with more than its fair share of such events, the the Rubber Ducky Race will generate funds to support Adopt a Classroom of Puerto Peñasco. But how exactly to duckies race?
Shipped out a few meters off of Rocky Point’s Sandy Beach, bins full of the plastic birds (NOT an endangered species!) are cast into the waves. There, the tide takes over, moving the largely disinterested ducks towards a random date with destiny. In other words, some lucky duck is gonna’ be the first one to hit the beach, and become this year’s winner.
What’s at stake? Plop down 5 bucks for a duck, or 10 smackers for 3 quackers, and along with helping a worthy charity, you are entered to win prizes. If your numbered duck is drawn, you could win a stay at on of the Sonoran Resorts, or a round of golf, massages, and more.
So get your ducks in a row and support this fun charity event. Contact the event organizers to purchase ducks at RPbarbO@gmail.com, or call 602 324 9529, or in Mexico 638 383 4963.

Bigger than last time; like they said the last time!

From the first impromptu show in JJ’s Cantina many moons ago, Roger Clyne, the Peacemakers, and Circus Mexicus have continued to evolve. The most recent iteration of the popular music event shows that it is expanding to Super Nova status. More bands, more venues, more of everything. Humble beginning have given way to a major musical event.
With the tsunami of Circus Mexicus about to hit, here are some things new that you might not be aware of. For the sedate residents of Puerto Peñasco (I’m sure there must be a few!) you might have to try a little harder than ever to find a quiet place to hide till next week. Resistance is futile however, so join the celebration!

What’s new with the music this year

Looks like it a big chunk of the Phoenix music scene got scooped up and plopped down in Rocky Point this week! There will be an impressive 22 musical acts at this year’s Circus. Notable details include RCMP playing two completely different sets for their main stage performances on Friday and Saturday night.
That theme is taken up as the Refreshments follow the same format for both of their weekend performances. The 20th anniversary of the initial release from the group, ‘Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and Buzzy’, has seen a busy tour centered on the material form that album. Roger and the reconstituted Refreshments should have these tunes honed to a razors edge for Circus Mexicus XXV.
Following the mainstage blowouts on Friday and Saturday nights, hard partiers can traipse across the street for late night shows in Banditos, beginning at 12:30 (and ending….?)
The impressive Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts make a first appearance. Notable favorites from Circuses past include the Pistoleros, the Black Moods, and Elvis Before Noon.

New places to hear the bands

This year, along with regular venues like JJ’s, Banditos, and of course the Mexican Moonshine Main Stage, look for mid day music on the patio at Capone’s on Friday afternoon.
Sunday morning comes sooner and harder than you ever expect at Circus Mexicus. You will certainly have been admonished to ‘pace yourself’ by the powers that be many times by this point in the weekend. Those with the huevos, can get themselves some huevos at the 9am Sunday morning Xochitl’s Breakfast Jam on the rooftop of this notable Cholla Bay Restaurant.

Circus Mexicus XXV support for local Charities

Helping out with those in need on the Rocky Point community is not a new thing for Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. In the past, Circus Mexicus has seen proceeds directed to worthy causes here.
The Saturday morning Rock and Beach Soccer Tournament bring together players young and old, good and bad, fresh or hung over to the sand in front of the Sonoran Sea Resort. Maybe you will come out of it with something to brag about, but everyone involved will have helped support local charities.
Fans bring donated things to the Esperanza Children’s home on Saturday morning. New this year, raffled tickets will be sold to support local charities, with winners and fun prizes to be announced from the Mainstage on Friday evening.

So, are you coming?

At this point, you either have your tickets, or you maybe have a wild hair to blow everything off and come down last minute. Do it! Circus Mexicus XXV looks to be one for the ages. Lots of new bands, and venues, Refreshments back in the mix, etc. There is also a real sense that you will be a witness and participant as this institution moves to the next level.

The Club at Laguna del Mar

This course course is out of town to the east, and is a part of the property that comprises the Grand Mayan resort. Vidanta is well known with tourists for resorts and golf courses located in some of Mexico’s top vacation destinations, like Nuevo Vallarta and Los Cabos discover this.

This course is a Nicklaus Legacy design. Nine holes stretch along the Sea of Cortez on one Side, with an estuary on the other. Links at Las Palomas
