Sure you can ride a banana boat, zoom around on an ATV, or get up the guts to fly in an ultralight. You need adrenaline? Rocky Point’s got it. But did you know that you can also strap yourself into a car, hit the gas pedal, and tear up the track like it was NASCAR?
Rocky Point Speedway sits below the dunes towards the end of Sandy Beach, beside the road going out to Cholla Bay. It’s really big, but easy to miss because it sits down in a natural ampitheater. This makes it a great place to watch the action below. Owner Darren Dodd can often be seen on the track, grooming and tweeking the contours with his Bobcat.
And the track? It’s a short course stadium style oval, perfect for Darrens Old 77 modified racer. After some some coaching on the side lines, you hop in with an instructor at your side, fire it up, and see what you can do in an actual race car. The speed is real, and there is a GoPro camera mounted inside to catch the action.
When not a training ground for future Dale Earnhardts, Rocky Point Speedway hosts sand drags, sprint races, off road racing, and monster truck expos. Along with this full schedule of events, twice a year it is the site for Rocky Points only Mud Run experience. An obstacle course is laid out complete with water hazards, rope ladders, balance beams and more. Some take it serious and go for their best time. For others, it’s a fun way to get outside with friends.
