The city of Puerto Peñasco has begun bringing big changes to the Malecon.
What are the changes?
1.Barriers are being installed that will protect street vendors, and keep them out of the way of traffic.

  1. Traffic will no longer flow past the main open area of the Malecon, but will be rerouted at Zaragosa. This is the intersection at Don Julio’s Restaurant. All of the main public area will be for foot traffic only.
  2. Alcohol will no longer be allowed in the public areas. Currently, parking spots towards the end of the Malecon tend to be tail gate parties. Drinking will be restricted to inside the many bars in the area.

This move seems to be designed to improve the tourist experience, and to support local merchants. The area attracts tourists, and is a main gathering place for the local population as well. It remains to be seen if this will create an increased need for parking.
