A sea turtle came ashore today near the Las Palmas Resort to lay her eggs. The Peñasco Tourist Auxiliary Police spotted the turtle. At this point, representatives of the government environmental agency get involved.
They make sure that the eggs are protected. In the past, nest areas have either been roped off, or the eggs have been taken for safe keeping. Due to the extreme temperatures and chance of upsetting the nest, the turtles best chance to hatch comes from keeping them safe in climate control.
Turtles take around 6 weeks to get to the point of hatching. Then of course they make their famous dash to the waves. Released turtles can have an improved chance of survival, because they can get to the water and avoid predators like gulls.
