Highway 8 is the stretch of road that takes you from Lukeville at the Arizona border down to Rocky Point. Its about an hour drive. A little longer if you happen to get stopped for speeding in Sonoyta.
On the US side, Highway 85 brings travelers from Phoenix and Tucson to the border crossing. On both sides of the line you cover some pretty empty territory.
This past December, Peñasco hosted the Arizona Sonora annual meeting. Officials, business leaders, and people who want to network with that crowd, get together to plan common development goals for the ‘Mega Region’ of the States of Arizona and Sonora.
One action agreed on was to create a Safety Corridor. Public safety officials attended a follow up session this past week in Rocky Point to get the ball rolling.
The Safety Corridor is meant to improve conditions for travelers. Already a joint training session brought together first responders from both side of the border. Coordinating the various agencies who would be involved in an accident situation is one of the projects goals.
Also in the works are signs in both Spanish and English, as well as expanded rest facilities.
Plans are to make the improvements of the Safety Corridor ready for March, and the thousands of Spring Breakers heading are way.
