One activity that’s fun to indulge in when in Rocky Point is shopping. From the tight little shops along the Malecon to the ‘Cholla Mall’, sun glasses, serapes, t-shirts and funky hats are all up for sale. Fun stuff, and a nice way to remember your trip.
In the Old Port neighborhood you will find Mercedes Rusticos. Here the attention is on wonderful hand-made items of all kinds, using techniques that go back to the early days of Mexicos history.
The shop is easy to recognize – giant metal Mariachis and horses stand near the door. Walk inside and be amazed by the sheer amount of interesting and beautiful things all around. Sets of hand blown glassware in every color stand next to bins of metal figurines and tapesty scenes on pillows and blankets. To your right, a giant armoire seemingly hand carved and adorned with antique clavo nails. And this is just the first of are several more rooms like this!
A trip through the meandering house is like visiting a museum that is almost a maze. You wander into little courtyards with flowering trees and a curious parrot. Turn a corner and a well dressed metal skeleton sits on a bench taking in the sun. There’s room for two. Want to join her?
*Mercedes Rusticos is located on the main road out just before you leave the Old Port
