Grupo Vidanta has built some of the most well known resorts throughout Mexico. A few miles east of Puerto Peñasco, you will find its’ Mayan Palace development, along with the Peninsula Golf Course.
A recent article at cruiseindustrynews.com points to the purchase by Vidanta of their first cruise ship. The ship will be named the Vidanta Alegria. But where will it sail?
Rocky Point’s Home Port Project has been in the news lately. Earlier this year, the Governors of the States of Arizona and Sonora agreed that supplies for future cruise lines based in Peñasco could cross into Mexico without a hitch. This cooperation was part of local efforts to keep the project a priority with officials in Mexico City.
The recently completed Arizona Sonora / Mexico Commission meetings here at the Convention Center confirmed that this lobbying had an impact. It was announced that for 2018, more than 13 million dollars will be allocated for the continued construction of the Home Port.
Recent years had seen progress stalled, and the Project’s future questioned. Up to this point, a break water has been built that juts out into the shallow ocean at the west end of popular Sandy Beach.
The Vedanta Alegria is expected to be ready for her new role by the Spring of 2018. There is no official confirmation from Grupo Vidanta’s about it’s plans for the ship.
