Don Julios’ Bar & Grill

  • image

Located on Freemont Blvd. on the way to Las Conchas, Don Julio Bar and Grill takes it’s name from owner Julio Valenzuela, long time local restauranteur. Popular Mare Blu and new Portofinos are also his projects, both of which focus on seafood with an Italian point of view. Don Julios menu is built around steaks, seafood, and Mexican favorites.

A major part of the ambiance here is the building itself. It’s interior brings to mind the Old World elegance of a courtyard from a colonial Hacienda. Everything feels handmade, and the centerpiece is a stone fountain with water that cascades down from the high ceiling. An outdoor patio compliments the main seating area, which features large comfortable booths. The seperate bar offers even tables of it’s own, and is a popular spot to catch a fight or other sporting event on one of the large T.V.s.

The menu brings together choices like Chile Rellenos stuffed with Shrimp, Shrimp Patron (Breaded Shrimp in a Mango Sauce), a Baby Back Rib Appetizer, or the large Porter House steak. Like most places in town, strolling singers will occasionally stop by your table, and offer a version of Besame Mucho, or some other romantic Mexican classic.

Of all the places offering buffets on the weekends, and there are lots of them, Don Julios is consistently busy with local families as well as visitors to town. You will find omelettes and waffles made to order, along with a variety of the classics of Mexican cooking. Chilequilles (corn tortillas in a red chile sauce, onions and cream), pozole, chicharrones in a green chile sauce, and a table of fresh fruit, juices, and desserts are there, along with more Americano familiar scrambled eggs, potatoes, and bacon.

Taking the relaxed atmosphere and adding a touch of class is the music of Antonio Mosqueda. ‘Antonio’ as he is widely known, is kind of an institution in Rocky Point, playing fine solo music in the best places around town for many years. With guitar, harp, and flutes from the Andes, Antonio focuses on the melody. You always know what song he is playing, and it is always well known.
