Viva Peñasco, Fiesta and Culture
The streets around Calle 13 will be full this coming weekend of February 26th through 28th with the very first Viva Peñasco Celebration. A party for the pueblo, highlights will include Bandas all three nights.
Although Carnaval has passed, this event is Carnaval like. Things will kick off with a parade of decorated floats. Winners will be judged and participate in another parade Saturday, along with marching bands and a special Batucada, Brazilian style percussion unit.
There will also be a fair, so if you are a bumper car fan like me, get ready. A stage for local artists and artisans is also on the bill. A special appearance on Friday night on the main stage features Jazz from Arizona’s own Doc Jones, with saxophonist Kerry Campbell, formerly with the group War.
Flam Chen, a cool performance group out of Tucson, will be on hand to offer some street theater. They are kind of like Cirque de Sole, but with fire! The nights are for music, and get ready for a full on Mexican style party with Grupo Norte, Hermanos Vega, and local versatile group Son de Sonora.
Fund raised from the event will go to assist the local DIF social services association.
