Just off of the Malecon, Rocky Point takes a little but a of Bohemian turn with Puerto Viejo. On the corner across the street from the cities main old Church, Puerto Viejo is a coffee shop that roasts their own.
Catch them on the right day, and they will be running their small but state of the art roaster, making artisanal beans to sell to commercial customers in cities like Hermosillo. It’s a neat experience to have a cup and watch it being created right in front of you! Different varieties are available by the pound, and all of the coffee sold here is Mexican. Chiapas State in fact, from the families coffee plantation down south. Owner Luis Altimirano is an expert and a coffee lover. To highlight the love of all of the detail possible when making a cup of coffee, Puerto Viejo offers more than one way to make it. Espresso? French Press? Aero? The choice is yours. As in any good coffee shop, milk, chocolate, ice, and all sorts of flavors can be added until you have it just as you like it, even if it’s original resemblance to a simple cup of Joe long gone.
You can get some sweet Mexican bread, Pan Dulce, to go with your drink. The great little deck is where you want to spend an evening people watching. Come Tuesday nights, Rocky Points’ Cine Club offers an open air movie night. On some nights the crowd is big enough cover the patio as well as the sidewalk with chairs. Films from around the world are shown, always either in English or with subtitles.
