RockyPoint.COM recently had a chance to speak with Puerto Peñasco’s First Lady Linda Pivac de Munro. The First Lady heads up the DIF, Rocky Point’s social service agency affiliated with the local administration. One project of real importance to Linda is supporting deserving students chasing the dream of education.
Every year, the city hosts the Black and White Ball. This fancy dress gala is a chance to put on your best, have a lovely dinner, and do a little dancing! Behind the scenes, money raised this coming September 30th will go to assist Rocky Point’s kids striving to get their degree.
The First Lady shared a few words with us . . .
In considering the need to support individuals of limited means within the community, approximately forty-one years ago the municipal administration set to the task of organizing the now annual Black and White Ball. Since then, the traditional Ball has taken place nearly every year, except for three, for reasons we are unsure of.
In continuing with tradition, Linda Pivac de Munro has persevered with this beautiful effort since 2015, when she held the first Black & White Ball in her role as Municipal DIF President. At that time, funds raised from the Black & White Ball were put toward beginning a scholarship program for students of limited economic means. In addition, that same year the Municipal DIF was able to open the “Student Home” in Mexicali, B.C., which houses students from Puerto Peñasco pursuing university degrees and specialties not offered locally. These outstanding young students are substance free, and have excellent grades.
The home, in addition to covering housing costs, is equipped with utilities including water, electricity, cable, etc. It is a comfortable and welcoming space for the youth, who will be able to see their dreams of becoming professionals come true, and who we are sure will be of tremendous pride for our community. To date, we have 83 scholarship students and our goal is to reach a total of 150.
This noble work would not be possible without the wonderful support of our sponsors, such as Sonoran Sky. Thanks to this support, on September 30th we will once again be holding the traditional Black & White Ball and anticipate approximately 800 guests. All proceeds raised from the evening will be put toward scholarships for students most in need.
The 2017 Black & White Ball will be held at the Convention Center and feature live music by “Puerto Luna” from Puerto Peñasco, and the group “Vertice” from Cd. Obregon, Sonora. Thirty-two beautiful ambassadors from different areas will also enrich the evening with their presence, and a Queen will be crowned through a process of chance.
Mrs. Linda Pivac de Munro, on behalf of the Municipal DIF, expresses her heartfelt appreciation for the support and participation of all who make this wonderful event possible. She invites all who wish to help with this effort to visit the DIF offices, as such support will enhance efforts to assist those in need, as well as in providing a better future for these young students.
